چکیده

The residual volume and total lung capacity of 1,455 working Pennsylvania coal miners were determined as part of a larger epidemiological study. The age of the subjects varied between 18 and 65 with a mean of 48-7 years. The total lung capacity of the subjects was determined from standard posteroanterior and lateral chest films while the forced vital capacity was determined by spirometry (O'Shea et al., 1970). The effect of increasing radiographic category of simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis on lung volumes was investigated. It was shown that the residual volume increased with radiographic category and that this occurred whether or not the miners had obstructive airways disease. The presence of obstruction had an additional effect over and above that due to coal dust alone, so that the largest increase in residual volume was found in miners who had both obstruction and radiographic evidence of simple coal workers'

Lung cancer in coal-miners.

In a study of coal-miners suffering from lung cancer two features of special interest are recorded. The difficulties in diagnosis are illustrated by case reports. The two-year survival rate after surgical removal of the tumour is significantly better in coal-miners than in non-miners. After operation 87% of coal-miners were alive two years later, compared with only 36% of other patients operate...

The action of small amounts of quartz and larger amounts of coal and graphite on the lungs of rats.

Experimental and field work on silicosis, while concentrating attention on the danger of exposure to the dust from hard rock, has produced a sense of false security in regard to the coal miner. Mavrogordato (1918) stated: " It may be regarded as established that all forms of dust enter the lungs and that some, such as coal, are relatively harmless, while others, such as flint, are deadly ". Bro...

Occupational noise induced hearing loss in coal miners and coal washing factory workers in Kerman province

Introduction: The occupational noise induced hearing loss is one of the wide spread problems and a long term complication of working in noisy environments. At the present, large groups of workers who are working in noisy environments are exposed to hearing loss. So, this study is aimed to determine the prevalence of hearing loss (more than, 25 dB) of the workers in coal mines and leaching fac...

Characterization by scanning transmission electron microscopy of silica particles from alveolar macrophages of coal miners.

The structure and composition of silica-rich particles recovered by lavage from the lungs of three active miners with different medical histories were studied using high-resolution electron microscopy and chemical microanalysis. The results are compared to the similarly determined structure and composition of respirable-size mineral particles obtained from roof-bolter dust-box samples from two ...

Mortality of Dutch coal miners in relation to pneumoconiosis , chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

EDITOR,—Meijers et al presented a very interesting study on mortality of Dutch coal miners. Most of the coal miners, 3367 out of 3790 (89%), had radiological manifestations of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP). All the coal miners had an increased mortality due to ischaemic heart disease (IHD) in all four periods of follow up when compared with the total male population in the Netherlands. The...
